Albert's & Irene's New Mittleider Garden | LDS Prepper

http://youtu.be/ms5oXZwsc8E

John and I are home teachers to Albert & Irene. We spent the last two days helping them build their new Mittleider garden. We replaced their off-grid self watering container garden with a high production Mittleider garden. This is the first 18" wide grow box that I build a T-frame with an plastic covered A-frame on it. It was a fun, hard working two days spent with friends. This morning we bought seedlings and seeds and planted the garden with Broccoli, Cabbage, Brussel Sprouts, Lettuce, and Turnips. It looks great.

Tracking Energy through Space | NASA

http://youtu.be/AKAsedkrb84

Simulation courtesy of J. Raeder/UNH.

This short video features commentary by David Sibeck, project scientist for the THEMIS mission, discussing a visualization of reconnection fronts.

Taking advantage of an unprecedented alignment of eight satellites through the vast magnetic environment that surrounds Earth in space, including NASA's ARTEMIS and THEMIS, scientists now have comprehensive details of the energy's journey through a process that forms the aurora, called a substorm. Their results showed that small events unfolding over the course of a millisecond can result in energy flows that last up to half an hour and cover an area 10 times larger than Earth.

Trying to understand how gigantic explosions on the sun can create space weather effects involves tracking energy from the original event all the way to Earth. It's not unlike keeping tabs on a character in a play with many costume changes, because the energy changes form frequently along its journey: magnetic energy causes eruptions that lead to kinetic energy as particles hurtle away, or thermal energy as the particles heat up. Near Earth, the energy can change through all these various forms once again.

Most of the large and small features of substorms take place largely in the portion of Earth's magnetic environment called the magnetotail. Earth sits inside a large magnetic bubble called the magnetosphere. As Earth orbits around the sun, the solar wind from the sun streams past the bubble, stretching it outward into a teardrop. The magnetotail is the long point of the teardrop trailing out to more than 1 million miles on the night side of Earth. The moon orbits Earth much closer, some 240,000 miles away, crossing in and out of the magnetotail.

James Flynn: Why our IQ levels are higher than our grandparents'

http://youtu.be/9vpqilhW9uI

In 1900, only 3% of Americans practiced professions that were deemed "cognitively demanding." Today, 35% of us do, and we have all learned to be flexible in the way that we think about problems. In this fascinating and fast-paced spin through the cognitive history of the 20th century, moral philosopher James Flynn makes the case that changes in the way we think have had surprising (and not always positive) consequences.

Conflict Minerals: Blood on Your Smart Phone or Your Car?

You are reading this on a smartphone, then you are probably holding in your palm the conflict minerals that have sent the biggest manufacturing trade group in the U.S. into a court battle with the Securities and Exchange Commission. At stake in this battle between the National Association of Manufacturers and the government is whether consumers will know the potentially blood-soaked origins of the products they use every day and who gets to craft rules for multinational corporations—Congress or the business itself.

The Dodd-Frank Act, passed in 2010, is primarily known as the law that tries to tighten regulation of the financial services industry and improve aspects of corporate governance. It also requires companies to track and report the conflict minerals used in their products. These minerals are tantalum (used in cellphones, DVD players, laptops, hard drives, and gaming devices), tungsten, tin, and gold, if they are mined in the Democratic Republic of Congo and surrounding countries including Rwanda, where the mineral trade has fueled bloody conflicts.

The rule requiring disclosure of conflict minerals will go into effect in 2014. Congress included it in Dodd-Frank out of concern for what is known as the “resource curse”—the phenomenon wherein poor counties with the greatest natural resources end up with the most corrupt and repressive governments. The money earned from selling the natural resources props up these harsh regimes and funds violence against their citizens and neighbors. According to the New York Times, Rep. Jim McDermott, who supported the requirement to disclose conflict minerals, visited a group of rape victims in Congo and traced much of the suffering in the country “to rebel soldiers who sold tantalum and other minerals to finance their war.” As the Dodd-Frank legislation puts it, “the exploitation and trade of conflict minerals originating in the Democratic Republic of the Congo is helping to finance conflict characterized by extreme levels of violence in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, particularly sexual- and gender-based violence, and contributing to an emergency humanitarian situation therein.”

In August 2012, the SEC, which implements parts of Dodd-Frank, issued a rule requiring that companies disclose whether their products contain conflict minerals that are “necessary to the functionality or production” of their products. Companies are also expected to detail which mine or location the conflict minerals came from, the efforts the companies made to figure this out, lists of the smelters or refineries used to process the minerals, and a description of any products that are not “conflict free.” They must post information on conflict minerals on their website.

Two months after the SEC acted, the NAM, along with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the Business Roundtable, sued to try to stop the rule from taking effect. The trade groups argued that complying with the rule would be costly, that it is unclear whether Congolese people would benefit, and that the rule violates companies’ First Amendment rights by compelling them to speak. (Some big companies, including Microsoft, General Electric, and Motorola Solutions, have publicly opposed the business groups’ stance on the conflict minerals rule.)

Cruz vows to speak against ObamaCare until unable 'to stand'
-and - Mr. Smith Goes to Washington [movie]

In a final act of political theater before a key test vote, Sen. Ted Cruz launched Tuesday into a marathon speech on the Senate floor decrying ObamaCare -- amounting to a last-ditch effort to rally support for Republicans' bid to defund the health care law.

The Texas Republican senator declared Tuesday afternoon that he intends to speak in opposition to ObamaCare "until I am no longer able to stand."

"ObamaCare isn't working," he said. "There are politicians in this body who are not listening to the people."

Cruz's speech topics ranged from the American revolution to the Washington establishment, his Cuban-born father and the impact of the health care law.

As his speech neared its sixth hour, Cruz took an odd turn by reading his young daughters a bedtime story via the Senate floor cameras. Cruz said his book of choice, Dr. Seuss' "Green Eggs and Ham," was a favorite of his as a child.

Homemade Mini Crossbow vs. Zombie Head | Jörg Sprave

http://youtu.be/dV0C7CZQkjk

The rubber powered mini crossbow obviously was well received... but it did have some room for improvements. Accuracy was so promising that a sighting device was called for, so we installed a (cheap) red dot sight and added a cheek rest. Also, a sled was attached for much easier cocking (using your body weight instead of your arms),

The weapon is tested in this video against a realistic looking rubber head made by the great make up artist Nicolay Mayer (http://www.nm-make-up.de), who created it for the "Zombie Wars" trailer that will premiere on YouTube next week.

See how three arrows hit the target with "undead" accuracy!

Chasing Comet ISON | NASA

http://youtu.be/m3Ko8knZ7N0

Comet ISON (C/2012 S1) may become a dazzling sight as it traverses the inner solar system in late 2013. During the weeks before its Nov. 28 close approach to the sun, the comet will be observable with small telescopes, and binoculars. Observatories around the world and in space will track the comet during its scorching trek around the sun. If ISON survives its searing solar passage, which seems likely but is not certain, the comet may be visible to the unaided eye in the pre-dawn sky during December.

This animation shows two views of comet ISON's path through the inner solar system. The first is a view following the comet along its orbit. The second is a view perpendicular to ISON's orbit.

Like all comets, ISON is a clump of frozen gases mixed with dust. Often described as "dirty snowballs," comets emit gas and dust whenever they venture near enough to the sun that the icy material transforms from a solid to gas, a process called sublimation. Jets powered by sublimating ice also release dust, which reflects sunlight and brightens the comet.

On Oct. 1, ISON passes within about 6.5 million miles (10.5 million km) of Mars. As it goes by, it may be visible to some of NASA's Mars rovers and satellites, including the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter and Curiosity.

Then, on Nov. 28, ISON will make a sweltering passage around the sun. The comet will approach within about 730,000 miles (1.2 million km) of its visible surface, which classifies ISON as a sungrazing comet. In late November, its icy material will furiously sublimate and release torrents of dust as the surface erodes under the sun's fierce heat, all as sun-monitoring satellites look on. Around this time, the comet may become bright enough to glimpse just by holding up a hand to block the sun's glare.

Sungrazing comets often shed large fragments or even completely disrupt following close encounters with the sun, but for ISON neither fate is a forgone conclusion. Whatever happens, scientists will be able to learn more about comets by how it interacts with the sun's tenuous atmosphere, the corona.

Following ISON's solar swingby, the comet will depart the sun and move toward Earth, appearing in morning twilight through December. The comet will swing past Earth on Dec. 26, approaching within 39.9 million miles (64.2 million km) or about 167 times farther than the moon.

Image from USGS

An earthquake with a magnitude of 7.8 has hit a remote area of south western Pakistan.

The strong quake struck a remote mountainous part of the country at 4.29pm local time (12.29BST) around 100 kilometres (60 miles) southwest of the city of Khuzdar in Balochistan province, at a depth of 15 kilometres.

It was felt as far away as the Indian capital of New Delhi, hundreds of miles to the east, where buildings shook.

There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage, but many of the buildings in that part of the country are made of weak materials and there were fears a death toll could grow.

The United States Geological Survey issued a red alert for the quake, warning that heavy casualties were likely, based on past data.

Tremors were felt across the province as well as in the sprawling port city of Karachi, residents said. People in Ahmedabad in India, hundreds of miles from the eipcentre, ran out of buildings and into the street.

A senior Pakistani meteorologist, Muhammad Riaz, told Dunya TV station it was a "major" earthquake and "heavy destruction" was likely.

Secrets of the Sun

http://youtu.be/utQCvdRNKxI

Nova reviews what scientists have learned in recent years about the sun's behavior and how it works. Most significantly, astronomers are at last beginning to understand the the solar phenomenon that impact our civilization; solar flares and coronal mass ejections.

Nova examines current research on the Sun. It looks at the dangers posed by solar flares and follows scientists as they monitor a large solar flare heading toward earth in 2011. It also discusses the causes of solar flares and looks at the launch the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) which offers uninterrupted coverage and high-resolution observation of the sun.

History of the World in 1.25 Hours

http://youtu.be/YNgfzMAXIyU

The history of the world is the history of humanity, beginning with the Paleolithic Era.

Distinct from the history of Planet Earth (which includes early geologic history and prehuman biological eras), world history comprises the study of archeological and written records, from ancient times on. Ancient recorded history begins with the invention of writing.

However, the roots of civilization reach back to the period before the invention of writing. Prehistory begins in the Paleolithic Era, or "Early Stone Age," which is followed by the Neolithic Era, or New Stone Age, and the Agricultural Revolution (between 8000 and 5000 BCE) in the Fertile Crescent.

The Neolithic Revolution marked a change in human history, as humans began the systematic husbandry of plants and animals.

Agriculture advanced, and most humans transitioned from a nomadic to a settled lifestyle as farmers in permanent settlements.

Nomadism continued in some locations, especially in isolated regions with few domesticable plant species; but the relative security and increased productivity provided by farming allowed human communities to expand into increasingly larger units, fostered by advances in transportation.
