Sun Spotters

NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory mission, scheduled for launch February 3, 2010, will probe the sun's atmosphere and inner workings, helping scientists better understand solar storms.

SDO Teaser

During its five-year mission, the Earth-orbiting Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) will seek to reveal how the sun's magnetic field works, what governs the ups and downs of the solar cycle and how solar activity affects Earth.

Even after SDO is launched, our current eye on the sun, SOHO, will remain in use. Originally planned as a two-year mission, SOHO currently continues to operate after more than ten years in space. In 2009, SOHO's mission was extended until December 2012. [Hmmm.]
