Distilling Essential Oils: The Basics

Distilling Essential Oils: How It's Done

Distilling the essential oil from lavender involves loading the retort with the lavender buds, filling it with purified water, monitoring it for two to three hours and separating the essential oils from the hydrosol found in the steam produced.

Distiller Parts

The three main parts of a lavender distiller include the retort, the condenser and the separator, also known as an essencier.

Choosing a Distiller

Choosing a lavender distiller requires consideration of the size and material, whether it be a large stainless steel still or a smaller copper still.

Disclaimer: Lila is using a copper distiller with an essensier made by The Essential Oil Company, in the U.S.A. I have neither seen one firsthand nor receive any compensation from any purchase. I just want one -- the stainless steel, propane-heated, food grade model -- though, I think I'd better buy the farm first. ;D

I also really love essential oils and have had wonderful success with using pepperming oil as a natural medicine for my allergies.

Thanks for the great post!
