FDIC Bank Watch List vs. My Bank Watch List

Crowd at New York's American Union Bank during a bank run early in the Great Depression. The Bank opened in 1917 and went out of business on June 30, 1931. Photo from http://www.ssa.gov/history/bank.html.
This Bank Watch List has been updated. There are now 1,343 E-Rated Banks. Click here for the latest list. [Updated 03/06/12]
Banks are dropping like flies. I received three email notices from the FDIC regarding bank closures yesterday. Among them was the Montgomery, Alabama-based Colonial BancGroup, with about $25 billion in assets. Its demise marks both the largest and the 77th bank to fail this year - and, in my opinion, as Karen Carpenter sang, "We've only just begun..."
According to its quarterly report released Wednesday, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation said there are 305 416 (reported Aug. 27) banks on its "watch list" - nearly triple the number from the same time last year.
Now, of course, the FDIC’s website does not disclose the names of the banks on this watch list for the reason that if you knew that your bank was in trouble, you might be tempted to pull your money out, right? Take heart. There is a way to determine if one of those troubled banks is yours.
BankRate.com is one of many (but perhaps the only free) services that provide ratings information on the relative financial strength and stability of U.S. commercial banks, savings institutions and credit unions. I've taken the liberty of selecting the lowest-rated institutions from their 3,047 listed banks to come up with my watch list. This list does not include credit unions. You'll need to search their site yourself for that information.
The following list will not necessarily be the same as the FDIC's watch list. It's just too difficult to exactly populate a list with all of the parameters that the FDIC uses to determine their problem banks. However, these are the poorest-rated banks according to BankRate.com based on capital adequacy, asset quality, profitability and liquidity. It should suffice.
Much like grades in school, a banks' soundness is rated A-E (with an "E" equaling an "F" grade, but still passing.) I'll leave it to you to determine whether you feel comfortable with your money parked in a D or E-rated bank or not.
First, a quick break down of how these U.S. banks are doing. Of the 3,047 our "class" scored:
A = 424 -or- 14%

B = 1,468 -or- 48%

C = 703 -or- 23%

D = 280 - or- 9%

E = 172 -or- 6%
The count for "my watch list" (comprised of "D" and "E" scores) totals 452, much higher than the FDIC's list of 305 416 (reported Aug. 27.)

If you see your bank on this list and do plan to withdraw your money, please double check my work with BankRate.com first. In addition to ratings, they also provide the bank's balance sheet that will give you more detailed information.

Disclaimer: My small community bank is not listed with BankRate.com. Last year, when I went to my bank to withdraw a large amount (over $10,000) to make a purchase with cash, the bank told me it would take a day for them to get the money. These days I only keep enough in there to pay the bills.

This is good work. I am curious if you took it to the next step so money could be made shorting these. I have lost my ass in the SKF. I should have shorted individual weak banks. So many banks have gone out of business and the SKF just goes down. Do you know which of these are publicly traded? I have started to do the work but have yet to find a publicly traded bank based on your list.

Thank you, Lawrence.

To answer your first question, No. I have neither short nor long positions in the market these days, though I agree that there is much money to be made on the downside.

Having lost a substantial amount of money during the dot com bubble burst, I learned to sell when I started to feel like dancing. I sold EVERYTHING when the DOW hit 14,000 and haven't looked back.

As to your second question (which banks are publicly traded) I suggest you start with this list, follow the regional bank links then delve into the savings and loans. Hope this helps.

Thanks for reading and good luck.

The link you provided is really good. Thanks. When I looked at your original list of D and E rated banks from Bankrate, I pulled up about 50 of them in yahoo and unfortunately none seemed to be publicly traded. I am sure there are a few, but instead I am going to work from the publicly traded links you provided.
My question is that when I pull up bankrate.com and try to get the ratings of the publicly listed banks, (this is the link I use) http://www.bankrate.com/rates/safe-sound/bank-ratings-search.aspx I get star ratings rather then letters. Did you use something different? What specifically did you use on bankrate if its not the link above. Let me know.... I really appreciate your help. I think there is a lot of money to be made in more banks collapsing. I have had this thesis for a long time but have played it wrong. This should work out much better. There was a brokerage report where in 2010 40% of prime mortgages will be under water, this will kill banks. My mortgage is almost under water and I am prime, in NJ, and put down 20%. If you do any more work on this let me know.... lrosof@gmail.com. If you send me email, I will share what I do... Thanks for your help!

Hi Lawrence,

I used http://www.bankrate.com/rates/safe-sound/bank-ratings-search.aspx to get the BankRate.com data and converted the 5 star ratings to "A", the 4 star to "B", the 3 star to "C", the two star to "D" and the one star ratings to "E" myself.

I agree that working from the Yahoo Finance data backwards is a good plan.

In addition to your information about more home mortgages being under water in the future, keep in mind that the commercial real estate bubble has yet to burst, as well the credit card bubble. You may also be surprised to know that the TARP money was not spent to remove the bad mortgage debt from the bank's books. See my story titled Obama lied. People died. Click here to see all of my articles about the FDIC.

This economic meltdown is far from over. In fact, it's just beginning. Save as much money as you can. Invest it in food, water, a good AR-15, a good .45 and ammo, ammo, ammo. You're gonna need them.

Feel free to write to me at info@covertress.com.

Best of Luck,

Jim Sinclair: "Apparently this closing was not covered on the FDIC website.

"The inviting conclusion is that as other agencies close down financial institutions, that institution will migrate to the FDIC. It seems that FDIC statistics of closure might not apply in such a situation if the FDIC did not affect the closure, only the cost of the closure. We shall see."
