Amelia

AMELIA, the latest film to tell the tale of Amelia Earhart, will open in theaters on October 23rd but, it may not be until next summer that we learn of the aviator's final fate.

Researchers at the International Group for Historic Aircraft Recovery, or TIGHAR, say they are on the verge of recovering DNA evidence that would demonstrate Earhart had been stranded on remote Nikumaroro Island (formerly known as Gardner Island) before finally perishing there.

Among other artifacts previously discovered by the group were early 20th-century makeup and two pieces of broken glass that match a 1930s compact mirror.

Now armed with mitochondrial DNA from a woman directly related to Earhart, the TIGHAR team is confident that their next expedition in June will finally solve the 72-year-old mystery of the disappearance of Amelia Earhart and her navigator Fred Noonan.

Amelia Earhart has held an intense interest for the country, even the world. As for me, as an aviator and aviation buff since before high school, her story has enthralled me.

I would give much, to have been born in 1900, so that I could have experienced fixed-wing aviation in its infancy. Open-cockpits, questionable engines, high glide-ratio planes, and almost no decent bad-weather instruments.

That is flying, and Amelia exemplified the best traits of it.

Amelia Earhart is an absolutely fascinating icon in America. I read her biography, Amelia, and was absolutely riveted. Hilary Swank is a great pick for the role, can't wait to see it.
