Iran's Latest Missile Test May Be Its Last

Excerpt from Ahmadinejad Says Iran Successfully Tests New Missile

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said Iran successfully launched its new surface-to-surface Sejil-2 missile and indicated the Persian Gulf country is working on more potent rockets.

New Iran Missile Test Increases Tension

“Sejil-2, which has advanced technology, was launched from Semnan and hit its exact target,” the state-run Fars news agency cited Ahmadinejad as saying today. “In the near future, we will launch more powerful missiles with longer ranges.”

“Iran will send enemies to hell before they strike,” Ahmadinejad, 52, told a stadium audience. “Iranian people are so powerful now. If a bullet wants to be shot toward it, Iran will destroy the base and all its members before they shoot.”

The solid-fuel missile is an adaptation of the Shahab rocket, which Iran says has a range of 2,000 kilometers (1,240 miles), putting Israel and U.S. forces based in the Persian Gulf within reach. Earlier versions of the missile used liquid fuel, taking up 23 meters (75 feet) of the 26-meter body. With solid fuel, the space needed is decreased by an eighth, Fars said.

Mostafa Mohammad-Najjar, Iran’s defense minister, said that “mass production” of the missile has started. Najjar said Sejil-2 is equipped with sensitive sensors and a new navigation system that makes it more accurate, Fars said.

Iran is “playing with fire,” Israeli Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon said about the test. Since Israel was already in range of Iran’s missiles, this development should be more worrying to European nations now within reach, Ayalon told Israel Radio.

Iran feels no threat from enemies: Ahmadinejad

Tehran Times Political Desk

TEHRAN - Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has stated that Iran feels no threat from its enemies and can respond to any attack.

“Today, Iran is capable of turning any base from which a bullet is fired against Iran into a hell,” he said during a visit to Semnan Province on Wednesday.

Ahmadinejad pointed out, “In the past, some countries… used to threaten Iran. However, I should say that today, artillery, tanks, and missiles are no longer effective. These words are uttered by some politically backwards people.”

He was referring to Israeli officials’ recent flurry of threats to attack Iran unless it halts its peaceful nuclear activities.

However, the president insisted, “The Iranian nation has always sought justice… The Iranian nation wants peace and has compassion and has been a pioneer in monotheism and philanthropy.”

“Unfortunately, some believe that we will just be sitting in Tehran, Semnan, Mashhad, and Ahvaz, and the Zionists will arrive at our borders with the ‘from the Nile to the Euphrates’ motto. This is a satanic idea,” Ahmadinejad observed.
